Phil Ken Sebben

To All Things An End

So, they've ended Harvey Birdman: Attorney At Law. I'm not terribly surprised. When Colbert left the show, it just lost so much of its magick. Hell, I wasn't able to watch the second disc of Volume 2 after they killed off Phil.

Ha ha! Spoiler. )

Volume 3 is due out... soonish. I guess I should get around to watching that second disc.

DVR

So, I paused live television for the first time last night.
This will make consumption of programs we try to catch regularly (i.e. Family Guy, American Dad) much more efficient. Whee.

Consumable Media -14 June 2005

For those of you who get a buzz off consumable media, there's a couple hot items being released on 14 June that are worth mentioning.

Kristen and I just got done watching the MTV Movie Awards (don't judge; it's anything but quality entertainment, but it's okay to subject yourself to mindless entertainment now and again) from which we learned that the Foo Fighters are putting out a double disc album soon. I looked it up on The IntarwebTM straight away and found that it's going to be released on the 14th. It's titled In Your Honor and is in no small way a very obvious nod to the bands roots. Of course, if you didn't realize that David Grohl was the drummer for Nirvana by now, I can say quite certainly that you must take up residence under a rock. Specifically a very large rock with extra strong pop culture shielding.

Evidently, the band is half rock and half acoustic, which should make for an interesting mix. The song they played on stage was "Best Of You" which has First Single written all over it. I'm not trying to say this as a bad thing - good song, definately. If you're a radio listener, you're just bound to be hearing this song a lot more, assuming you aren't already.

This is definately something to tie a string around your finger or write up a Post-It for. Watch for it next week.

Speaking of mindless entertainment, season 2 of Reno 911 comes out next week. In case you haven't been exposed to what this show is yet, imagine taking a good collegetown improv comedy group, putting them in police uniforms, and letting them make police sketch comedy for a living. It's decidedly low-brow ("He's got an aparatus strapped to his forehead!") and is hardly the wittiest thing you'll ever find on television (or on TV-on-DVD), but I pity you if you can't find this stuff hilarious.

In other news, my DVD of season 1 of Harvey Birdman, Attourney At Law - one of Cartoon Network/Adult Swim's re-imagination shows - arrived today. I'll write more about that once I've had an opportunity to digest it.

Serenity Graphic Novel Miniseries from Dark Horse

If you're into science-fiction at all, you'd best be damn well aware that the theatrical preview for Serenity was recently released. Serenity, of course, being the silver-screen follow up to the cult series Firefly from writer/director Joss Whedon (of Buffy the Vampire Slayer reknown). If you haven't taken it upon yourself to experience the series, then you're really missing out.

The release of the trailer triggered a fever-pitched buzz around the series - the result of so much enthusiasm and excitement igniting into a blaze that will burn throughout the summer until the movie is released this fall. Many of you know that I am myself contributing to the fuel for that bonfire, though my zeal is not nearly as remarkable as many others.

Nevertheless, after reading a tip from [info]deusinnomen, I've discovered that Dark Horse Comics will, in fact, be releasing a three-part miniseries of graphic novels that will serve as a bridge between the show and the movie. Normally, I'm not a big comic book kind of guy, but given that I know [info]duck2ducks, who runs the G-Mart in Chicago, you'd damn well better believe I'm all up ons. I've signed up an account with G-Mart and set up one subscription for the miniseries. As the issues are released, they will be delivered to the G-Mart here in Champaign (otherwise known as the Dragon's Den) for me to pick up. You can also opt to have the issues mailed to you rather than Will Call.

There will be three covers for the first issue. Pictured here is one of the issue #1 covers - the other two are Inara and Jayne. As there are 6 more characters, I think it's a pretty safe bet that issues #2 and #3 will also have three covers each. If you want to get all three covers for each issue, you'll want to sign up for three subscriptions. At the cost of $2.99 per issue, even three subscriptions won't break the bank.

Errata: Evidently, I was mistaken about ordering multiple covers. The subscriptions in the list evidently correspond to just one item code, so assigning multiple subscriptions will end up getting you multiple copies of the same cover. However, Don tells me that you can go into Advance Orders and specify for multiple covers somehow. I'll get more details on how to do that from the man and update again.

Ordering Procedure Update: Here's the shakedown from [info]duck2ducks. If you're satisfied with cover #1, you're fine just setting up a subscription for the miniseries at g-mart.com. Now that the new order cycle has begun, you can go into Advance Orders and place an order for covers #2 and #3. So, if you want to collect all nine covers ultimately, you'll need to place an Advanced Order for covers #2 and #3 during the order cycle before each issue is released.

Evidently, subscriptions only map to a single item code. Therefore, setting up three subscriptions will end up getting you three copies of whichever cover the subscription maps to.
